Sixteen members attended the society’s AGM in January with apologies received from four
members. All officers gave positive reports of the various activities held during last year with the
accounts showing a profit over the year. The BBQ held last year as well as the Christmas get
together were both successful, thanks to the hard working officers.
Peter Stevens was inaugurated as the new president and Martin Frost was elected as president elect.
The retiring chairman Bill Squires, together with Peter & Sandra Stevens, were made honorary life
members for their contribution to the society. Other officers elected were: Ghalib Al-Nasser,
chairman & show organiser; Graham Barton, vice chairman; John Gibbens, secretary and website
controller; Sandra Stevens, membership secretary & treasurer; Graham Barton & George McMillan,
joint show managers; Ian Thorogood, show secretary; Stephen Squires, patronage secretary; John

Barton, auditor. Darren Dunnage agreed to take on the task of organising the monthly table shows.
It was decided to increase the subscriptions to commence in January 2024 to £10 for adults and £5
for juniors.
The society will hold its usual BBQ incorporating the young stock show on 2 nd July and Laura
O’Reilly has been invited to judge the show.
The society also accepted the invitation from Cambridgeshire BS for a knock-out competition at
Waterbeach on 14 th May.
The society will be holding its silver championship show on 30 th July and the judges invited are Bev
Hutt, Laura O’Reilly and B.S. president Chris Snell.
The society was saddened to hear that Derek Lungley passed away on 13 th January at the age of 89
years. His funeral will be held on Friday 17 th March at 3.15 pm at the Ipswich crematorium,
Cemetery Lane, Colchester Road, Ipswich IP4 2TQ.
The late Derek was a founder member of the society, an honorary life member and served as
president in 2011. He was a gentle person always helping newcomers to the society and making
them very welcome. Sandra Holden, past president & secretary of the society had fond memories of
Derek who was the first person to make her welcome when she joined the society with her friend
Linda Haylock in 1990 and he took them under his wing.
Even though Derek was ageing, and often had trouble walking, he had put in a full day at the annual
show helping from early morning, right up to sweeping the floor and locking up, returning the hall
key to its rightful holder.
When Derek had breathing problems with the budgies; he then went into breeding Gouldian Finches
of various varieties; which were very colourful and beautiful.
When the club faced some severe financial problems some years back and had only a few members
left it needed to raise funds. Derek was the first, along with the late Ted Rose, to book a hall and
organise regular jumble sales which made a good profit for the society. He will be sadly missed by
Derek Lumley
