October 2022 meeting
IPSWICH B.S. OCTOBER MEETING by Ghalib Al-Nasser, President
The society had to cancel their October monthly Colour Competition and the Peter’s Swindle because of the Bird Flu pandemic in the area. However, members attending were entertained by the guest speaker for the evening, Beverley Hutt.
In his introduction, chairman Bill Squires referred to Bev as a very active breeder, exhibitor and administrator. Bev joined the B.S. in 1974 and became a judge in 1987 and judged the B.S. Club Show in 1993, 1998, 2008, 2015 and will judge the show next year as well. Bev became B.S. President in 2015 and is currently B.S. Club Show Trophy Steward. Bev is also Past Club Show Secretary & B.S. Patronage Secretary and was awarded the B.S. Silver Bird in 2020. In her area society, the South Midlands BS, she is the current show secretary and past President, Chairman & Secretary. Bev was also involved in the Lincolnshire & East Anglia BS area society in her early days and was past President. Last but not least she can be classified as Miss Cambridgeshire BS; doing everything and holding every post you can think of.
With this introduction Bev demonstrated humbleness and dedication to the fancy and reminisced on her early days when she started in the hobby alongside her late father Dennis Brown. Initially the D & B Brown partnership was more involved in the Lincolnshire & East Anglia B&FBS area society and were part of the team who represented the LEA at the B.S. 1975 Convention held in Harrogate. In due course they became involved with their current area society, the South Midlands BS, and also Cambridgeshire BS.
Their initial love was lutinos and cinnamons and as a young girl she met so many of the top names of the fancy of the day and each memory is cherished. When she got married to Steve, her husband also took on the hobby of breeding budgerigars but was only involved with the clearwing variety. Bev reminisced with great affection of her budgerigar partnership through the years initially as D & B Brown then, after marriage, that partnership became known as Brown & Hutt. After the death of her father her daughter Laura came into the partnership as B & L Hutt and, when Laura got married, the partnership is now known as Hutt & O’Reilly.
Bev looked back at the years that she has been in the hobby and said that this hobby has given her so many friends and visiting so many places including judging in Canada, Italy, Pakistan and the USA.
When asked of any highlights in her time in the hobby Bev replied that it would be, of course, the presidency of the Budgerigar Society but also her time as show secretary of the B.S. Club Show where in those days everything was done by hand and typewriter with entries in the region of 5000.
At the end of a lovely evening the society president Ghalib Al-Nasser presented Bev with a bouquet of flowers on behalf of the society.
